We know that having Jesus at the center of our life is what being a disciple of Jesus is all about.
Next fall we'll go take the next step and look at how and where our congregation can be focused to likewise follow Jesus.
We'll ask the question: "Is everything we do in our church helpful to the making of Disciples who are engaged in the Transformation of the World?"
In preparation, we have the opportunity to do some summer reading that will both deepen our faith and prepare us for the next season in our lives together.
I encourage you to pick up one or more of the following books. (You can order them through our website at www.LancasterUnited.org .)
This is a great novel-like glimpse into one church and its struggle to catch up to the present. Pick this up if you'd like to meet people like yourself who are just trying to cope with change.
2) "The Jesus I Never Knew" by Philip Yancy
Philip Yancy is an award winning writer who talks about his own struggles with Jesus. He points out that we all carry ideas and images about who Jesus is that are often incomplete and need updating. This book is a great read for anyone. Easy and Accessible!
3) "Missional Renaissance: Changing the Scorecard of the Church" by Reggie McNeal
Reggie opens up a very challenging topic: "By what means do we measure success in the church today?"
Beginning with Chap. 3, he shares some very provocative ideas that get surprising results!
This book is a must for any and all of us who are called to be leaders here at LUMC. It's a challenge that pays off in the end!
PLUS….. To deepen your "read," you can join one of our coffee "book club" groups around the Antelope Valley. It's always great to meet with others and share ideas about our faith!
These groups will meet three or four times over the summer. They can meet in a home, at church, or even at a coffee shop near you. (yea Starbucks!)
When you go to our website, you can order the books and sign up for one of the coffees.
And then… you can volunteer your home for one of the coffees as well!
Do it today! You'll meet new friends and you'll grow in your faith! Awesome!
Wow! We've had a powerful nine months in this "church year" of ours (Sept through May.) And I know that God is just beginning to empower and surprise us as we journey into the future.
I strongly encourage all of you to read other books as well that will help you on your spiritual journey.
One great suggested reading list is offered by our United Methodist Women (UMW). It's found at: www.bit.ly/UMW-Reading )
Enjoy the Summer. Read something inspiring, healing, challenging! Grow closer to God! It's a great time to be alive!!!
What scripture has stayed with you this week?
What have others learned about Jesus Christ because of you?
How goes it with your soul?
