When can you find time to pray more deeply? more meditatively?
Here are the books I mentioned in my sermon this week.
"Creative Prayer", by E. Herman.
"The Case for Christ", by Lee Strobel
"The Jesus I Never Knew", by Philip Yancey
"The Genesee Diary", by Henri Nouwen
And how deep do you go with the "Lord's Prayer?"
Actually it should be called the "Disciple's prayer," for Jesus gave it to us, his disciple's so that we could learn how to pray properly:
Luke 11: 2-4
"He said to them, ‘When you pray, say..."
"Father," actually "ABBA" in aramaic, translated more like "Poppa/Pops/ DAD", a VERY intimate form of greeting.... for GOD!
"...hallowed be your name." Even you name is glorious! It is overwhelming to be in your presence.
"Your kingdom come." I don't care about all the things of the world, I care about you and where you are.
"Give us each day our daily bread." It's on you that I trust for everything! my survival, my food, drink, the air I Breathe:
"And forgive us our sins," Do I need to count them, acknowledge them? You know that I know them so well. I ask your forgiveness, for I keep forgetting that I'm not in charge. Help me change, dear lord.
"...for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us." Oh, wow, that's the hard one, isn't it? It's easy to say. I say it every week, every day, but do I mean it? Do I really live it? Have I gone to the people I've hurt and asked their forgiveness? Have I let others come and offer their forgiveness?
Have I encouraged them to be "in debt" to me? Expecting them to repay what I've done for them?
Maybe I should make an inventory of those I have wronged and see what I can do to help repair the situation?
"And do not bring us to the time of trial." There is evil out there lord, there is death and destruction.
I have about all I can handle, yet you are always here and I praise you name in the midst of even the darkest moments of life.
And over the years we have added: "For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever.
Can I take this prayer and really make it live again in my life?
What do you think? What can you do today to improve your prayer life?
